Gramaphone opened in 1969 and originally sold all American forms of music. In the early 1980s began focusing on Disco, Italo Disco, and two new forms of music styles House and Techno records. The store was the first of its kind in the Chicago to focusing on vinyl for DJs and Electronic music aficionados alike. The store is also famous for employing many Artists and DJs that were prominent to the House, Techno, and Hip Hop scenes. Since then has become a destination for DJs and Artists. The store focuses on most forms of Electronic music such as House, Techno, Disco, Italo Disco, Hip Hop, R&B, Freestyle, Jungle/Drum & Bass, Trance, Downtempo, Ambient, Acid Jazz/NuJazz and more. The store has always played an integral part in the Chicago House, Techno, Hip Hop and Rave scenes. The store moved in 2001 and is that location currently.
